Workshop Programme

29th July 2010
Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre, Bedfordshire UK

Selecting an Obsolescence Monitoring Tool

The one activity which has remained as a cornerstone to Pro-Active Obsolescence Management is the monitoring of components. Many systems are out there to assist in this process but the selection of the right methodology for the individual need is not a straight forward process. This workshop will provide guidance into this selection minefield.

The speakers have been drawn from individuals who have been through this process already and will be able to share their experiences, good and bad, in the selection of the right methodology and product to meet the needs of their company and the Pro-Active Obsolescence processes which they employ.

The Workshop is interactive, with delegates being able to share their experiences and the challenges which they face in component monitoring.

Planned Upgrades

Planned upgrades have long been a key tool in the pro-active obsolescence management armoury.

The concept of a planned upgrade to a system (or a planned technology refresh) is an effective means of limiting exposure to obsolescence, and provides a horizon for life time buy decisions. However the reality may be that the planned upgrade either slips or is cancelled.

This workshop aims to explore the reality of planned upgrades – what are the pitfalls? Is there any mitigation for changes to the original plan? The experiences of those who have lived through programmes using planned upgrades will be drawn on to highlight these issues.

Emerging Technology and Reliability

Semiconductor component development has been driven for the last few decades by the mass markets commercial demands of consumer electronics - performance and cost. Semiconductors designed for these markets do not need to survive military/aerospace environments and have very limited guaranteed longevity.

Opportunities do exist for high-rel applications to benefit from the cost reductions and performance advances made in consumer electronics, for example in communication technologies such as wireless communication, ultra-high speed processing, miniature cameras and solid-state mass storage. However, the new technologies that drive these advances are not designed for longevity and are prone to additional effects, such Single Event Upsets (SEU), limited operating temperature ranges and short operational life. Hirel applications require alternate design techniques to overcome the limitations of these emerging technologies. Consumer electronics are also prone to counterfeit which increasingly pollute the supply chain.

This workshop will advise on how to assess new technology electronics, what limitations may exist and strategies to ensure that system reliability is not compromised. In particular, the workshop will advise on current manufacturing technologies used in these types of components. In addition, the workshop will give specific guidance in avoiding counterfeits within advanced electronic components.

The workshop will be of particular benefit to project managers, design engineers and anyone involved in the selection and review of advanced microelectronics to be used in high-rel or longer-life equipment (5 -10 years and beyond).

Qualification, Re-Qualification and their Issues

So — you have been proactively managing your designs to manage obsolescence risk and have now identified a series of solutions that you want to apply to your design.

You now need to identify the stakeholders, the costs of implementation, a timetable for implementation and a communication plan.

To do this you will need to consider what requalification requirements you may have, any configuration control impacts, and what resources will be needed to undertake these tasks.

This workshop will look at what project management and commercial skills you will need to apply to satisfy your customers and your internal organisation that you have implemented the changes successfully and safely.
